Social Inequality for LGBTQ+

The gender disparity in depressive disorders may relate to social inequalities and living standards across nations. Poeple belonging to LGBTQ+ community have a higher prevalence of mental disorders than heterosexuals. The prevalence of disorder in terms of minority stress explaining that stigma, prejudice, and discrimination create a hostile and stressful social environment that causes mental health problems. The stress processes, including the experience of prejudice events, expectations of rejection, hiding and concealing, internalized homophobia, and ameliorative coping processes.

‘Hate crimes’ are crimes committed against people because of their race, sexuality, religion, gender identity or disability. Members of the LGBTQ+ community are at a greater risk of experiencing hate crime compared to heterosexual people. Mental health problems such as depression, self-harm, alcohol and drug abuse and suicidal thoughts can affect anyone, but they’re more common among people who are LGBTQ+.
